Difference Between FUE Hair Transplant & DHI Hair Transplant

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

DHI vs. FUE. Which hair transplant method is best? Which one should I go for? These are topics that you may have already come across during your research on hair transplants. With so much information available, it's understandable that things can become confusing. Here's how we define both DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). We will examine the differences between these treatments and provide some tips on how to decide which one is right for you. But before we get into the specifics, let's take a summary look at what DHI and FUE are.

What Is FUE and How Does It Work?

In recent years, follicular unit extraction (FUE) became more popular than follicular unit transplantation (FUT). FUT, or strip harvesting, is a common technique for harvesting hair to cover bald spots. However, FUE (or follicular unit extraction) removes the grafts directly from the scalp in one quick sitting. As a result, FUE does not leave as visible scars and ensures natural-looking results.

How It Works

FUE hair transplants involve extracting small clumps of donor's hair (known as grafts) that are manually placed into a storage solution. After the extraction stage is complete, the doctor will use micro blades to prepare the canals. Surgical grafts are placed into fresh sutured wounds, and the incision is closed as usual. Once the grafts are submerged in a solution, the doctor will remove them and implant them into the recipient area. Following FUE surgery, patients can expect to see a visual improvement around two months after the transplant. More significant growth usually becomes visible after six months, while the full results typically appear 12–18 months after the procedure.

What Is DHI And How Does It Work?

The DHI procedure is a relatively new operation, and, like FUE, it leaves no visible scarring and produces natural-looking results. Graft extraction is similar to FUE, but there are a few key differences.

How It Works

For the procedure, hair follicles are extracted one by one using a specialized tool designed to be less than 1mm in diameter. The hair follicles are loaded into the implanter or pen, then drill directly into the recipient area. The canals are created during DHI, and then implantations are made simultaneously. The Choi Implanter Pen provides more precision to doctors when implanting hair follicles. Hair transplants in this manner allow the transplant team to control the angle, direction and depth of new growth. The recovery time for DHI is faster than that of FUE. The time it takes to see results is usually identical, depending on the type of procedure. Full results take 12-18 months with most procedures.

What Is the Difference Between DHI and FUE?

The main difference with extracted hair vs. implants is how the hair grafts are implanted into a recipient area. During an FUE hair transplant, the surgeon must open the hair follicles before implanting them. DHI has a tool, the Choi Implanter Pen, which is designed for this purpose. This creates the implantation stage right after extraction, rather than first creating canals for the grafts.

Which Is Better: DHI or FUE?

The FUE or DHI procedure you undergo depends on factors such as your hair loss classification, the size of the thinning area, and how much donor hair is available. For anyone considering a hair transplant to find the treatment that meets their expectations the most because this is what gives the best results.

FUE and DHI are two differing hair transplant techniques that can make a world of difference in achieving your desired look. The FUE technique is different than the DHI technique. This is why people with thinning hair should consider which of these two types of transplants would work best for them. Some of these differences are:

  • The FUE method is helpful for patients with more extensive regions of hair loss, whereas the DHI method provides better coverage in dense areas. If a patient has severe bald patches that are very wide and cannot be covered with just one session of hair transplantation using the DHI technique, they should use the FUE technique instead. This is partly because the FUE technique provides a way to get more grafts in one session.

  • One of the most critical differences between DHI and other hair transplant methods is how it places grafts. The DHI method uses a pen-like medical instrument called Choi implanter, which simultaneously creates recipient sites and transplants grafts.

  • The FUE method requires patients to shave their heads prior, while the DHI method does not require any shaving. This is an often-overlooked advantage for women.

  • The DHI method requires more skill and experience than other hair transplant methods. In this situation, the physicians and medical teams need to be exposed to a long-term training period to become more used to using this technique.

  • The DHI method has a faster recovery than the FUE method and typically involves minor bleeding.

  • The FUE method best covers large areas, whereas the DHI method can provide a better density.
